The Communication and Recovery Enhancement (CARE) study seeks to develop and evaluate an online program for LGBQ+ individuals who recently experienced violence where they were targeted at least in part due to one or more of their identities. CARE teaches a supporter of the survivor skills they can use to manage their responses to the survivor’s violence experience, as well as skills they can use in helping the survivor to recover. Survivors learn about the common impacts of an experience of violence, and what they can do to care for themselves during their recovery from the violence experience.
The CARE program consists of two 90-minute online sessions for the violence supporter where they learn skills to equip them in how to best support the survivor. Survivors and supporters complete a workbook together to practice the recovery-focused skills they are learning in the program. Participating in the CARE program takes about four weeks.
As part of the study, survivors and supporters complete online surveys to help us learn about how the program is working, and how we can improve it. They also will complete brief daily check-ins from an app on their phone.
