The Geography of Responses to Heat Risk in the U.S.

Investigators: Olga Wilhelmi, National Center for Atmospheric Research (Principal Investigator), Peter Howe, Utah State University (Co-Principal Investigator), Mary Hayden, University of Colorado Colorado Springs (Co-Principal Investigator)

Funding: This project is funded by the NSF HEGS grant.

Project Description: In this project, the investigators will assess how populations across every county and large municipality in the US perceive heat risks and engage in response behaviors; this will be situated against how policy- and decision-makers understand their constituents’ perceptions and behaviors. By doing so, the investigators will bridge the gap between how extreme heat risk and heat-protective behavioral response options are being perceived by the American public and how they are perceived and managed by heat governance actors in the US. This project contributes to broader efforts to build resilience to extreme heat in the US.
