At a recent discussion hosted by Growing Climate Solutions, Executive Director of the Lyda Hill Institute for Human Resilience, Dr. Charles Benight discussed what predicts successful coping for individuals and communities during times of disaster. Hurricanes and other environmental disasters have always been a significant source of stress and trauma for individuals living in impacted areas, but as the world grows warmer and storms grow stronger and more frequent, our changing climate ensures that more individuals and communities will be impacted. In this discussion, Dr. Benight gives a brief introduction to the psychology of disaster, recovery, and resilience.
